“The wise of heart will receive commands,
But a babbling fool will be ruined.”
Proverbs 10:8
“Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge,
But he who hates reproof is stupid” (haha i love how that word is in the Bible. straightforward, and to the point.)
Proverbs 12:1
“The way of a fool is right in his own eyes,
But a wise man is he who listens to counsel.”
Proverbs 12:15
“A wise son accepts his father’s discipline,
But a scoffer does not listen to rebuke.”
Proverbs 13:1
A few Sundays ago I was rebuked. The person who rebuked me was right, he was gracious, and gentle about it, but I didn’t like it, not one bit. I responded the way I was supposed to respond (at least outwardly), but inwardly I was struggling… “GRRR!! I feel so humiliated!!” “No, Jennifer. You know he’s right.” “But I don’t LIKE it!!”
So I went to the word. I knew there were many proverbs that talked about listening to correction and stuff, so I went to be corrected and told ‘this is what is pleasing to God,’ maybe my heart will submit to His word.
Sure enough the passages told me to submit, sure enough I was warned not to be like the fool who will not receive commands, who hates reproof, who does not listen to counsel, etc.
There was also a loving comfort: a person who is wise, is not someone who already knows everything. A wise person is someone who listens to counsel, and accepts discipline. Meaning! that a wise person does not necessarily have all counsel, and sometimes needs discipline. So I was told. “Yes, Jennifer. You were wrong, and you needed correction, and you need to listen to this correction, but I’m not trying to humiliate you, I’m humbling you.”
The Lord is gentle.
“A fool does not delight in understanding,
But only in revealing his own mind.”
Proverbs 18:2
Sigh. I just hate it when the fool looks like me, but the Lord is patient, and gentle.
